A desperate search is on among the Mediterranean Community to find a bone marrow donor for 52 year old Charalambos Georgiou.
If you are aged 18-40 and of good health please consider joining the register. The Leukaemia Society (UK) in Conjunction With The Anthony Nolan Trust will be holding a registration clinic: On: Tuesday 2nd Dec between 4.30pm and 7.30pm At:The Cypriot Community Centre, Earlham Grove, Wood Green, London N22 5HJ
Charalambos, a father of four the youngest being 2yrs old, originates from Bahna in Cyprus. We are asking if you know of anyone who has a similar family background to that of Charalambos please do make them aware of this appeal.
As tissue types are inherited characteristics, a patient in need of a bone marrow transplant is most likely to find a suitable donor amongst groups of people who share a similar genetic history to them.
In practice this means that, a Mediterranean patient for example, has the greatest opportunity of finding a donor within his or her own ethnic community. This is true of everyone whether he or she is of Mediterranean, Asian, Jewish, Chinese or, indeed, any identifiable racial group.
For example, of the roughly 330,000 potential donors listed on the Register, less than 1% of volunteers are Mediterranean and the figures are lower for many other ethnic groups. This means that the pool of people which may be realistically searched for donors is dramatically reduced, making it much more difficult to find donors for patients who are of non UK origin.
It is incredibly important that we increase the representation and ethnic diversity on the Bone Marrow Register. It is only then that we will be able to offer all patients a chance of finding a donor.
IMPORTANT NOTE: To register your interest in attending the above Clinic Please call the charity's Co-ordinator, Androulla Stylianou, on 07872633508 or email info@leukaemiasociety.org . Knowing numbers will ensure we have adequate resources and capacity at the clinic.
