The Leukaemia Society Patient Accommodation was established to provide a home for cancer patients and their carer while in London for treatment. Though small the property is a start we aim to build on.
Patients with haematological disorders and their families must adjust to a wide range of psychosocial stresses, including coming to terms with a life-threatening diagnosis and coping with aggressive and invasive treatment regimens. The stress of this situation is exacerbated for many patients who must relocate to London for specialist treatment.
The Leukaemia Society aims to make this move less stressful by providing Patient Accomodation.
Unique in concept, the accommodation can best be compared with a residential home without staff. Housework and cooking as well as recreation, are often shared by mutual consent as guests come and go. This has led to a popular description of the accommodation as "A home away from home".
