When a person has blood cancer, doctors use chemotherapy and radiotherapy to destroy the disease. It’s effective but leaves their immune system very weak and fragile. By giving them a stem cell transplant, we can boost the number of healthy cells to kick start their immune system.
For successful bone marrow/stem cell transplants it is essential to find donors with an exact tissue type match to the patient to avoid rejection. So it is vital that people from all different ethnic backgrounds join a bone marrow registry too. Without them, patients will continue to die waiting for a suitable match.
Some people may be put off by outdated perceptions of what a transplant entails. Thanks to advances in medicine, donating bone marrow is now much easier, and, for most people pain free.
"Joining the register is really easy and it doesn’t take a lot to do.” We need your help to get this simple message across!
We know that many more lives could be saved if more people were informed about what it means to donate.
